Davis College Holds 152nd Commencement

2010 grads

On Friday, May 7, 2010 Davis College held its 152 commencement exercises at Stranahan Theater, Toledo, Ohio. 86 graduates made up the class of 2010. The commencement address was given by Mr. George Kimble, class of 1963.

Davis College Holds Fifteenth Annual Student Design Show

On April 23, Davis College recently held its fifteenth Annual Student Design Exhibition and Competition. This event showcased the creative talents of students from the Davis College Graphic Design and Interior Design programs.

Winners of the competition were: Foundation Area: Nancy Powers, First Place; Joy Vorraber, Second Place; and Preet Kaur, Third Place. Graphic Design Area: Alicia Perry, First Place; Ana Guzman, Second Place; and Ashley Crapsey, Third Place. Interior Design Area: Sarah McKelvey, First Place; Sarah McKelvey, Second Place; and Ashley Narewski, Third Place.

Davis College Honors Allied Health Students at Medical Pinning Ceremony

The accomplishments of students in the Davis College Allied Health department were recognized at the 2010 Davis College Medical Pinning Ceremony. A total of 35 students from the Medical Assisting, Medical Practice Insurance and Coding, and Medical Secretarial programs received a medical pin. A Davis College student must be near completion of their program in order to receive a medical pin. Each student who attended the Ceremony pledged themselves to the ideals and ethical codes of the health care profession.

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredits the Davis College Medical Assisting program on recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants’ Endowment (AAMAE). Davis College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association (NCA).

Davis College Wins International Education Advertising Awards

Davis College has won a Bronze Award and three Merit Awards at the 25th Annual Education Advertising Awards presented by the Higher Education Marketing Report. The Bronze Award was received for the Davis College Graphic Design Program Website

2009 Holiday Card, and Heritage Museum Poster each received a Merit Award.

The Educational Advertising Awards is the largest educational advertising awards competition in the country. This year, over two-thousand entries were received from more than one-thousand colleges, universities and secondary schools from all fifty states and several foreign countries.

Davis Grad to Hold Comic Strip Workshop at Imagination Station


Brian Houdashelt, 2003 graduate (Graphic Design/Interactive Media), will be conducting a comic strip workshop on March 6 & 7 as part of the Animation exhibit now on view at Imagination Station. Brian produced a weekly web-based comic strip, Victor, from 2005–2008.

Davis Contributes to Haiti Relief Effort

Davis student, Ashley Crapsey, recently held a bake sale to help raise money for the Haiti relief effort. Davis College matched the proceeds made from the sale totaling $630. All proceeds went to the Red Cross.

Davis College has also teamed up with UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) to send health kits to the Haiti relief effort.

Each kit will contain:

Hand towels (15"x25" up to 17"x 27") - no kitchen towels
Washcloths
Combs (large and sturdy - not pocket sized)

Nail files or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
Bath-sized bars of soap (3 oz and up)
Toothbrushes (single brushes only in original wrappers, no child size brushes)
Adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
$1.00 to purchase toothpaste*

*Toothpaste is purchased in bulk to be added to health care kits to ensure that the product does not expire before they are sent.


Collection for pieces for health care kits to be sent to Haiti start Tuesday, February 2.

Davis Interior Design Students Receive Awards from MUBA

On Thursday, December 17, 2009 interior design students received awards from the Maumee Uptown Business Association (MUBA) for their winning window displays for the Maumee Uptown Window Wonderland 2009. A panel of Maumee area community leaders judged more than 30 storefronts in the competition.

Leasa Maxx of Maxx Marketing & Design presented the awards at a ceremony held at Davis College.

The winners were:

Second Place: Carrie Goss and Jennifer Vaneeckhoutte for KeyBank

Davis Instructor Named Teacher of the Year

Kathleen France, Department of General Education Chair, was named Teacher of the Year by the Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools. The award was presented to Ms. France at the Association’s Teacher/Placement Workshop and Annual Meeting on November 6 in Columbus, Ohio.

The Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools is the active voice of post-secondary career education colleges and schools of Ohio, which are non-tax supported, privately owned and administered.

Professor Becomes Full-Time Faculty Member at Davis College

Ed Gaston has joined Davis College as Assistant Professor in the Business Administration and Information Technology Department. As a full-time faculty member, Mr. Gaston teaches business, economics, and personal finance courses.

Gaston holds an MBA in Public Administration from the University of Findlay. He is also a Davis graduate (2003, Business Management).

Commenting on the Davis College culture Mr. Gaston states, “I love the sense of community that is more than evident not only amongst the faculty, but the student body as well.”

Financial Aid Officer Hired to Assist Students

Davis College has hired Melissa Kosinski as Financial Aid Officer to assist students in the financial aid application process. Among her other duties, Ms. Kosinski will interview financial aid applicants to determine eligibility and suggest appropriate sources of aid.

Kosinski is a 2009 Davis College graduate with a major in Business Management.

Graphic Design Student Featured in Toledo City Paper

Graphic Design major, Greg Lukasik, is featured in the Oct. 28 – Nov. 10, 2009 issue of the Toledo City Paper. The article centers around the opening of Greg’s alternative art supply store, Rogueworks. The article can be found online here.


Davis College Students to Decorate Maumee Storefronts.

Davis College is teaming up with the Maumee Uptown Business Association (MUBA) to decorate storefronts in Maumee during this upcoming holiday season. More than 30 Fashion Merchandising, Graphic Design, and Interior Design students will help 15 businesses decorate their storefronts. The storefront designs will be completed by November 24. Judging and prizes will be awarded at the November 28 holiday parade.

Davis Graduate Receives Alumni Award From OACCS
 
Steve Nathanson has been chosen by the Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools (OACCS) as the single recipient of the Association’s 2009 Outstanding Alumni Award. The award will be presented on Friday, November 6, 2009, at the Annual Meeting of the OACCS in Columbus, Ohio.

A 1971 graduate, majoring in accounting and marketing, Steve received his bachelor’s degree from Findlay College. He also holds a master’s degree from Central Michigan University. In addition to his academic success, Steve is a veteran having served our country in the Army.

Steve’s professional career has been in the healthcare industry. Currently he is the Regional Vice-President at Mercy Health Partners.

Steve also serves on Davis College's Board of Directors.


Davis Interior Design Graduate Featured in Magazine

The work of Michele Rose (Interior Design, 2003) is featured in the Winter 2009 issue of Kitchen & Bath Makeovers: A Better Homes & Garden Special Interest Publication. Six pages (52 – 57) showcase Michele’s kitchen design while four pages (96 – 99) present her bathroom makeover. This is the second time that Michele's work has been included in this publication.

Michele states, “Without Davis College, I would not have reached this point in my life. It wasn't luck...it was hard work.”

Department of Design Announces Launch of Graphic Design Program Website

The Department of Design has launched a website to promote the Graphic
Design program at Davis College. The site provides information about
the program as well as samples of student work and student interviews.

Department of Design Chair, Timothy Brunner states, “The graphic
design site will give people who are interested in our program insight into
our approach to teaching design, examples of how this approach is made
manifest, and a feel for the culture at Davis College."

Davis College Posts 92% Placement Rate For 2008–2009

Davis College has reported a 92% placement rate for 2008–2009. Over the past 10 years, the College has maintained a placement rate over 90% with 2006–2007 and 2007–2008 reaching 95%.

The Career Services Office at Davis College works with students while they are attending the institution and after graduation to support them in reaching their career goals. Through networking efforts and community partnerships, as well as class presentations, mock interviews, and individual coaching sessions, the Career Services Office provides opportunities that aid Davis College students in their employment search.

2009 graduate Ricardo Davidson states, “I really appreciate the fact that Davis College was not only concerned about my education but also my well being.”

Davis College Enrollment Rises
Davis College has reported that its enrollment for Fall Quarter 2009 has increased 11% from the previous year. This gain is in addition to the 4% increase the College experienced from 2007 to 2008. President Diane Brunner attributes the rise in enrollment to Davis College’s reputation for providing its graduates with marketable skills.

Davis College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.


Davis College Graphic Design Alumna Wins Award
Penny Collins, 1999 graphic design graduate, has been named as the Honorable Mention winner in the Commercial Illustration Category by the 39th Annual Creativity Awards.

This year, judges from some of the United States' most prestigious design firms evaluated the work produced by their peers and students.

The 39th Annual Creativity Awards received thousands of entries from 37 countries and 37 U.S. states. The competition showcases work from around the globe in the Annual Book published after the close of each year’s competition and sold in bookstores around the world.

H1N1 Flu Information
We encourage all members of the Davis College community to follow these guidelines so that you may help prevent the H1N1 illness from entering the Davis College campus.

Prevention

  • Wash your hands often during the day, and especially before eating or snacking.
  • Use alcohol-based sanitizers as often as possible. We have sanitizers available on campus.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as much as possible especially when touching objects touched by others (door handles, mail, money, etc).
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If a tissue is not available cough or sneeze into your elbow or shirt sleeve.
  • Do not share your food or drink with others.
  • Avoid close contact with those who are physically ill. Again, if you are sick, stay home.

Identification of H1N1 and Control

  • The symptoms of H1N1 flu are similar to the regular flu. They include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, and occasionally, vomiting and diarrhea.
  • If you observe a fellow student or employee exhibiting these symptoms, encourage them to follow the advice given above.
  • If you are sick with the flu, please wait until you are fever-free for 24 hours before returning to campus. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention defines the illness in this way:  a fever of 100.4 or greater, a cough or sore throat, and possible symptoms including runny nose, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue, vomiting or diarrhea.
  • If you are going to miss class, please e-mail or call your faculty member to inform them of your illness and arrange a plan for successful completion of your courses.  In the event you get the flu, faculty, staff and administration are committed to helping you successfully complete your studies.

Dan McCarthy Joins Davis College Full-Time Faculty
Dan McCarthy has joined Davis College as a full-time faculty member in the Department of Business Administration and Information Technology. He has been an adjunct faculty member teaching accounting since 2005.

Mr. McCarthy holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo, with a major in accounting. He also has 20 years of professional accounting experience.

Davis College Announces Ten Year Reaccreditation
Davis College has been granted ten year reaccreditation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Reaccreditation means that Davis College is recognized for its institutional quality and commitment to student learning. It also ensures that academic credit for completed coursework at Davis College is eligible to transfer to other member institutions.

Davis College, founded in 1858, is a private, two-year institution of higher education that serves the Toledo community by offering quality educational programs and services that meet the ever-changing demands of business. The College’s mission is to provide marketable skills that enhance the employability of its graduates.

The report of the comprehensive visit by the Higher Learning Commission in March 2009 states, “…the mission is pervasive in the College and is well understood by all and all who work to implement the mission of the College.”

The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools was founded in 1895 for the purpose of establishing close relations between the colleges and secondary schools of the region. Throughout its history, the Association has been committed to the improvement of education at all levels through evaluation and accreditation. Davis College Will Host Entrepreneur Expo on October 16th
Take Control—"Discover the Entrepreneur in You" Expo is a one-day event Friday, October 16, 2009, 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM at Davis College, 4747 Monroe Street, Toledo, Ohio.

Organized by the Take Control Group, the expo is designed to challenge Americans to take control of their lives in the current economic environment by presenting multiple paths to entrepreneurship and spur them to action.

The Take Control—"Discover the Entrepreneur in You" Expo will provide an introduction to entrepreneurship, showcase various small business development resources and programming. The expo is designed to motivate individuals to employ themselves, as well as show them how to access affordable entrepreneurial opportunities. Lunch will be provided.

New Academic Department Chairperson Appointed at Davis College

Mary Deloe has been appointed Chairperson of the Business Administration and Information Technology Department at Davis College. Previously she served as the Department’s Assistant Chairperson. In addition, Ms. Deloe has taught business and marketing classes at the College for over eight years.

Ms. Deloe is a member of the Ohio Business Teacher Association (OBTA) and has served on the Association’s Board of Directors and as Treasurer. She is also on OBTA’s Business & Industry Advisory Council. Ms. Deloe’s other professional memberships include the National Business Educators Association, Business Professionals of America, and she is a Certified Professional Networker.

Ms. Deloe volunteers at Emmanuel Christian School and Westgate Chapel in Toledo, Ohio.

Ms. Deloe states, “I am looking forward to positioning the Business Administration and Information Technology Department to succeed in the continually changing business environment.”

Davis College Interior Design Instructor Attains Professional Credential

Janet Weber, Interior Design Program Director at Davis College successfully completed the requirements for becoming a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional.

The LEED Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction.

As a LEED Accredited Professional, Ms. Weber has the expertise required to design a building to LEED standards and coordinate the documentation process that is necessary for LEED certification.

Davis College Holds Ninth Annual Scramble “Fore” Scholarships Golf Outing To Benefit Davis College Foundation
The Ninth Annual Scramble “Fore” Scholarships Golf Outing was held on Friday, June 26 at Bedford Hills Golf Course to raise funds for the Davis College Foundation. 13 teams consisting of nearly 50 golfers from the community participated in the event. Over 20 area businesses and organizations donated their time and financial resources to raise money for the Davis College Foundation scholarship fund.

The Davis College Foundation is a not-for-profit entity dedicated to creating opportunities for individuals and organizations to provide resources to enhance the education of Davis College students. The funds raised from the golf outing will be offered as scholarships to Davis College students who are active in both their education and the community.

Davis College Students Receive OBTA BIAC Commendation
Twenty-one Davis College students recently received the Business and Industry Advisory Council (BIAC) Commendation from OBTA, an Association for Business Technology Educators. To be eligible for this honor, a post secondary student must have completed a Business Education program. Davis instructors who are active members of OBTA nominated these graduates for this award based on their academic achievements and exemplary professionalism. Davis College Students Place at 2009 Business Professionals of America State Competition
Four Davis College students placed in nine different categories at the 2009 Business Professionals of America State Competition recently held at Tiffin University. Natalia Botti, Melissa Koskinski, Sadonna Smith, and Caitlynne Tackett each respectively placed in competitive events that tested their interviewing, management, and business skills. Ms. Botti placed first in state in the Extemporaneous Speech competition and each of the four students have qualified for the Business Professionals of America National Competition to be held in May. The purpose of the state contest is to promote professionalism, develop business expertise, leadership, and interaction among collegiate students who will one day become successful business professionals.

Davis College Attends “Save OCOG” Hill Day Rally in Columbus
On Thursday, March 12th several Davis College students, staff, and faculty members attended the SaveOCOG.org Hill Day Rally in Columbus. Over 200 students, employers, and officials from Ohio career colleges attended the rally to voice their concerns over the proposed change in the Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) for the next two years.

Governor Ted Strickland’s executive budget proposes to limit OCOG funding to students attending public institutions. Financial aid to private for-profit and nonprofit institutions would be directed to two new block grant programs and would be reduced by over fifty percent. During the Hill Day Rally attendees listened to testimonies given to the Higher Education Sub-committee in protest to the proposed changes to the OCOG funding.

Davis College Wins Awards in National Admissions
Advertising Competition
Davis College is proud to announce it has won two awards at the 24th Annual Admissions Advertising Awards competition sponsored by the Higher Education Marketing Report. Davis College’s submissions were among over 2000 entries from more than one thousand colleges, universities and secondary schools from all fifty states and several foreign countries.

Davis College received a gold award for its 2008 Academic Catalog and a Merit Award for its Website. The submissions utilized Davis’ theme, “It’s all about where you’re going,” and celebrated the College’s 150 years of educating the Toledo community. All entries were designed by the Davis College Community Presence Department.

Davis College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association (NCA).

Davis College Wins People’s Choice Award at
Canstruction Competition
A team of Interior Design students from Davis College participated in the recent Canstruction Toledo Competition, sponsored locally by the International Interior Design Association of Toledo. Teams of area architects, designers, and engineers constructed creative sculptures from large amounts of collected canned goods. After the competition was completed, the canned goods were donated to the Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank.

The Davis College sculpture, entitled Sphinx and Pyramids: Let’s Make Hunger A Thing Of The Past, was honored with the People’s Choice Award for the competition. Led by Interior Design instructor Janet Weber, the student team consisted of Lori Cervantes, Valerie Kazmaier, Kamilah Mabrey and Sidney Sterling. Davis College, Davis College student chapter IIDA, Clair David Office Furniture and Design, Sautter’s food center, and Davis alumnus Joey LeVally graciously sponsored the team of Interior Design students for the Canstruction event.

World Renowned Motivational Speaker Craig MacFarlane Gives Presentation At Davis College
World-renowned speaker Craig MacFarlane gave a motivational presentation to the students, staff, and faculty of Davis College on Thursday, February 26, 2009. Mr. MacFarlane inspired all who attended with his many stories of overcoming life’s challenges to become a successful professional and person. Davis College sincerely appreciates Mr. MacFarlane’s time and enjoyed his meaningful speech.

Area Career Colleges Welcome State Representative
Matt Szollosi
Area members of The Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools (OACCS) welcomed State Representative Matt Szollosi in a meeting held at Davis College on Monday, February 9, 2009. The purpose of the meeting was to inform Representative Szollosi on how career colleges have improved thousands of Ohioans’ lives by providing quality education in over 200 occupational areas. Local OACCS members in attendance discussed the positive impact of career colleges on the business environment and presented outstanding placement rates for students who have earned certificates, diplomas, and degrees at these institutions. The OACCS appreciates Representative Szollosi’s time and support as its members continue to offer valuable education to the students they serve.
